SSA Faxing FAQ
Numbers, formatting tips, and best practices for SSA faxes.
- Can I fax documents to the Social Security Administration (SSA)?
- Yes. SSA offices and the Office of International Operations accept fax in certain workflows (benefit verifications, documentation requests). Use the number provided by your office or the SSA page for your case; international operations fax is +1 (410) 966‑1861.
- How should I format an SSA fax?
- Single PDF: cover sheet → SSA letter/notice → your documents. Include your name, last 4 of SSN, claim/benefit number (if any), phone, and page count on the cover. Use black on white 300 DPI scans.
- Is it secure to fax SSA documents?
- Use an encrypted service. Include only the minimum identifiers on the cover, and avoid public Wi‑Fi. Store the delivery confirmation for your records.
- When should I send SSA faxes?
- During office business hours for fastest handling. For time‑sensitive updates, fax and follow up by phone.
- My SSA fax failed. What should I do?
- Verify the office number, resend as clean PDF, and try during office hours. If persistent, call the office to confirm the number and availability.
