How to receive a fax online

You need a fax number for the sender to dial. You do not need a fax machine or a separate phone line.

  1. 1. Get a fax number

Verify your email, choose a 30-day or monthly plan, pay, then activate your assigned US number. Area-code selection is not available.

  2. 2. Share your number

Give your active fax number to the person or organization sending you documents.

  3. 3. Open the incoming fax

Receive the fax as a PDF by email. Sign in to see received faxes and manage your number.

Choose how long to keep your receive number

A dedicated US fax number receives incoming faxes as PDFs. Choose $10 one-time for 30 days from activation, with no automatic renewal, or $10/month for automatic monthly renewal until you cancel. You can extend a one-time number for another 30 days. Sign in to manage your number, received faxes, and billing. Sending a fax is priced separately.

Common reasons to get a virtual fax number

Use a receive number when someone else needs to send documents back to you. That is different from one-time sending, where you only need to transmit a document out.

IRS and EIN paperwork

Put your virtual fax number on Form SS-4 when you want the IRS to fax an EIN response back to a private digital inbox.

Receive an EIN by fax

Banks and business forms

Use a dedicated fax number for account opening, verification requests, vendor forms, and documents that still move by fax.

Fax legal documents

Government agencies

Give agencies a stable fax number when a return document, notice, or confirmation needs to come back to you.

Fax the IRS

Remote and international owners

Receive US faxed documents while traveling, living abroad, or running a business without a physical fax line.

Fax numbers for expats

Virtual fax number for IRS EIN applications

If you fax Form SS-4 to apply for an EIN, the IRS can fax the EIN response back when you provide a fax number. An Onetime Fax virtual fax number gives you a private return number before you send the application.

The practical order is simple: get the receive number, put it on Form SS-4, fax the completed form to the current IRS number, then watch for the inbound EIN response as a digital document.

When a receive number makes sense

  • You need a return fax number for Form SS-4.
  • You do not want tax or bank documents going to a public fax machine.
  • You are remote, traveling, or outside the United States.
  • You want a PDF copy you can save with business records.

Virtual fax number FAQ

What is a virtual fax number?
A virtual fax number is a dedicated fax number that receives incoming faxes digitally. Instead of printing on a fax machine, incoming documents are delivered as files you can view and save.
How do I receive a fax online?
Enter your email, verify it with the link we send, choose a 30-day or monthly plan, and pay. Activate the number in your dashboard; we assign an available US number. Share it with the sender. Incoming faxes arrive as PDFs by email and can be viewed when you sign in.
What does a receive number cost, and how long does it last?
Choose $10 one-time for a number active for 30 days from activation, or $10/month with automatic renewal. A one-time number does not renew automatically; you can extend it for another 30 days. You can cancel an auto-renewing number before its next renewal.
Can I choose an area code or port in my existing number?
Area-code selection and number porting are not available. After payment, activation assigns an available US fax number. Check the assigned number before sharing it with senders.
What happens when my receive number expires?
A one-time number lasts 30 days from activation unless you extend it. A monthly number renews until canceled; after cancellation it stays active through its paid period. When a number expires, it stops receiving new faxes and is released. Save any PDFs you need from your email or dashboard before then.
Where can I find and delete received faxes?
Incoming PDFs are emailed to your configured notification address and appear in your signed-in number dashboard. You can delete individual received faxes there. You can also add or remove notification recipients in the dashboard.
Can I use an Onetime Fax virtual fax number for an IRS EIN?
Yes. If you are faxing Form SS-4 and want the IRS to fax the EIN response back, get your virtual fax number first and put that number on the form before sending it.
Do I need a fax machine?
No. A virtual fax number lets you receive faxes online, so you do not need a phone line, fax machine, toner, paper, or a shared office fax tray.
What if I only need to send a fax?
Use one-time sending instead. A virtual fax number is for receiving faxes; the send flow is best when you only need to transmit a document once.
